I was with my fitness trainer doing a spin workout today. He made a comment that had quite an impact on me. He said “You can do this workout at an effort level that shows you are trying to get in shape in 2 years, or you can do it at an effort level that shows you are trying to get in shape in 2 weeks.”

When he said this, it brought up some things in my mind that I found interesting. First off, it was great motivation for me. I really appreciated having the ability to make a choice about my workout intensity. In the middle of a workout, there are always two ways you can go. You can just do what it takes to make it through it, or out can take it to the next level and let this workout have true impact. It also made me think about how we approach all actions in our life. Do we take on our daily routine with the effort to just get through it or do we take it to the next level so it will have true impact? How about in our job? Our relationships? Our fun? Our family?

The other day I was listening to sports radio and a talk show guest summarized what the Lakers needed to bring to keep from getting eliminated. He said it was simply “Heart and Effort” and he was right. They needed to bring heart and effort to the game. Without it, they were finished. With it, they could be champions. My trainer was basically saying I needed to bring heart and effort to my workout. Without it, I am just doing things at the minimum level. With it, I could get my fitness to the next level. And now I am suggesting to you that we all could bring a little more heart and effort to all the areas of our lives.

What do you think? What area of life could you take on with more heart and more effort? And what new results are possible if you do bring heart and effort to your daily activities?
